Austin,
TX--In September 2000, The Original Celtic Renaissance, the Brobdingnagian
Bards, signed up on MP3.com as another Celtic band hoping to be noticed.
Fifteen months later on December 7, they are now the youngest band on
mp3.com to join the "1 Million Listens Club." This elite club includes
only the artists that have attained over ONE MILLION LISTENS of their
music on the popular website. In addition to becoming a part of this
unique group, the Brobdingnagian Bards are also the youngest group to
join the list.
"It's very cool," begins Andrew McKee, recorder player for the Brobdingnagian
Bards, "We didn't get together until 1999. Meanwhile, all of the artists
currently in the '1 Million Listens Club' were already on mp3.com racking
up listens in its heyday."
Earning over one million listens makes them one of the Top 30 bands
on mp3.com. The Brobdingnagian Bards attribute their success to their
unique style of music and their steadfast, persistent promotion.
They are 'The Original Celtic Renaissance' performing on autoharp, recorder
and mandolin. The combination of instruments gives the music a 16th
century quality. This is the magical sound heard in "Tolkien (The Hobbit
& Lord of the Rings)", their biggest hit song on mp3.com which has been
#1 on the World/Folk charts for the past month, due in part to the impending
release of the first "Lord of the Rings" movie on December 19.
But Gunn feels that the main reason for their success is their hardcore
guerrilla promotion.
"I'm not one to sit back and wait for things to happen." Gunn says.
"We have the power to choose how successful we will be. And I want international
success."
Their consistent promoting earn them over a thousand unique visitors
a day, making the 7th most listened to act on mp3.com last month; they
sell over a hundred CDs a month just online; and three hundred new fans
a month sign up for their electronic newsletter.
While these numbers are small for any Major label act, the Brobdingnagian
Bards have succeeded in doing this on their own successful independent
label, Mage Records. Mage Records has released eight full-length albums
for the Brobdingnagian Bards in just two and a half years.
"We love the music we write and play," Gunn begins. "And to hear from
scores of people daily saying, 'Thank you. You made our day" is the
biggest reward of all."
